Contains information pertaining to the following wars and time periods: Civil War -- Eastern Theater, Indian Wars, 1865-1897, Spanish-American War -- general, (WWI) -- Western Front, -- U.S., -- Eastern Front; WWII -- U.S. Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment; 7th, 12th, 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, 5th Seperate Brigade, Department of the Philippines, Columbia; Red Cross; 13th and 14th Training Battalions; 139th Fighter Squadron. General description of the collection: Godfrey family papers include material on Edward Settle Godfrey and his heirs. Information on General Edward Settle Godfrey, Sr. include biographies, correspondence (1861-1936); commissions and discharge papers (1874-1906); West Point material, maps and clippings. Some items concern the battle of Scary Creek, West Virginia (July 17, 1861) but the largest part of the collection focus on his activities as historian and Indian fighter with information on the Sioux campaigns of 1876; the Washita campaign, the Nez Perce War and the Ghost Dance Uprising. Some material on histories of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War I. Material on Edward S. Godfrey, Jr. includes: correspondence (1887-1960); numerous medical articles and speeches; autobiographies; West Point material and many clippings. His correspondence with his father especially that written during his service with the Red Cross during WWI have historical interest. Materials on Edward S. Godfrey III and McDonald Godfrey include correspondence (1918-1941); and some clippings about them. There is a clipping on the 139th Fighter Squadron of the New York Air National Guard in 1949.

Edward Settle Godfrey was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He spent most of his Army career as a company officer in the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. After seeing action as a short-term volunteer in the Union Army in 1861, he entered the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 1863 and graduated in 1867.
